Vision 2022

Identity, 2021
Supervised by Tal Levin

I chose Brett Whiteley for this conceptual brief of creating an identity for an exhibition at the State Library of Victoria. In my initial research I decided to separate his experiences in the United States and Australia, emphasising key words from these periods of time. I titled this exhibition Living in Blue to reference the effect of drugs and alcohol on his mental state and the aspect of him living at Sydney Harbour.

My event invitation/poster begins folded up only revealing a small part of the poster inside, consisting of chaos and the ultramarine blue colour, prevalent in his artworks. This user experience of receiving the folded up invitation and opening it up, communicates a sence of calm to chaos. Throughout the identity I focused on arranging the text in waves to reference the waves of Lavender Bay and the organic nature of his brushstrokes. The chaotic nature of the text highlights the difficult time he had in the United States. Taking inspiration from Self Portrait in the Studio, the ultramarine blue is flooded throughout the whole image, bringing the outside inside his studio, emphasising his love of living beside Sydney Harbour and his chaotic mind created by the effect of drugs, distorting what is outside his studio and inside his studio.

I also created a wayfinding system of an introduction to the exhibition, an artwork didactic and two directional signage to the two sections of the exhibition, his paintings from the United States and Lavender Bay. I also designed the gallery flags and a teaser film which can be viewed by clicking here.
