Sans or Serif

Type Design, 2020
Supervised by Vincent Chan

This typeface was created to be drawn with a stencil. My typeface has two versions, one that is a contemporary inline font with open spaces on the top and bottom of the letterforms and the other is created by adding decorative serifs to these gaps.

I created a type specimen to display the character set and explain how to use the stencils. The three stencils contain the various serifs and forms of the letters. When designing a typeface for a stencil, I had to consider how certain curves or straights of a letter can be repeated on others.

My thoughts behind designing Sans or Serif Regular were to create an interchangable typeface combining a unique sans serif skeleton and the ability to apply serifs inspired by the late 1800s to completely change its appearance.
