Patterns of Play

Poster, 2021
Design Competition Winner

My submission was one of 18 winning posters based on an AFL club for the Melbourne Design Week exhibition curated by Re. The brief was to create a pattern based poster by reducing AFL jerseys to their base forms, exploring how simple graphic patterns can evoke enough meaning to build a real and enduring sense of community. We were asked to consider how colour can capture deep seated emotion and how pattern can become a symbol of culture and community.

With my St Kilda themed poster, I broke my patterns up into four panels. The four panel designs are all inspired by various membership scarves from recent years. It was interesting to me how something as simple as the colours of red, white and black could create a different visual language based on varying widths. To allow the black cross in the centre of the page to stand out, I added a white cross pattern to this which adds more depth to the page and leads the eye to the four seperate panels around this bold shape.
