Capitol Theatre

Type Design, 2020
Supervised by Dominic Hofstede

The brief was to create a typeface based on the architecture of a Melbourne CBD building. I chose The Capitol and was inspired by the main theatre ceiling.

My typeface consists of horizontal and vertical modules with no right angles, referencing the shapes within the ceiling. Grey triangles in the corners of the letters create a 45° angle. There are no curves and no horizontal modules. The endings of the letterforms are triangular to represent the triangle shapes formed through the ceiling. I also created a series of icons that follow the same principles. The overall style and colour palette of my typeface represent the Art Deco style of the building as well as the decorative crystal appearance of the ceiling.
